Protesters gathered outside Nellie’s Sports Bar on Sunday evening in response to a disturbing video that appears to show a security guard pulling a black woman down the stairs. The video, filmed Saturday night over Pride Weekend and posted to Twitter, appears to show the woman dragged by the hair and arm, and also shows several people having an argument at the bottom of the stairs.
As reported by WUSA9, Keisha Young, 22, said in a channel interview that she is the woman in the video and has nothing to do with what sparked the incident, which appears to be related to someone. one who brought a bottle into Nellie’s bar that evening. Young believes she was mistaken for someone else by the security guard in the video.
“On June 12, I went to the nellies sports bar and grille to celebrate the pride and there I was dragged by security guards for no reason,” Young wrote in a statement on GoFundMe, where she raises funds to help him with his legal fees, medical bills, and therapy resulting from the skirmish at Nellie’s house. She wrote that she lost her glasses and iPhone, her clothes were ripped off, bruised and struggled to sleep due to anxiety. The GoFundMe reads in part:
I feel a little humiliated that I went viral being assaulted by a black man who should be protecting me. I’m a college student attending Morgan State University and graduating next year and just happy it hasn’t escalated too much and I’m still here in my pain and heartache , always able to tell my story and get justice.
Eater has contacted Young for further comment.
Nellie’s Sports Bar did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Eater. They issued a statement on his Instagram pages on Sunday who reads :
We were incredibly upset and confused to see the unfortunate event that took place at Nellie’s house last night. We are conducting a thorough investigation into the situation. At Nellie’s, we foster an inclusive and safe environment, so events like this are totally unacceptable to us.
