GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) – It won’t be a full influx this weekend, but some showers and thunderstorms can hamper your beach and boating plans.

Water temperatures have cooled considerably compared to last weekend. Last weekend water temperatures were very hot in the 60s and 70s, but upwelling has led to water temperatures now in the 50s and even 40s. occurs when northerly winds push warm surface water southward and cold water rises to take its place.

Showers and thunderstorms will be possible on Friday, especially in the morning. Some storms could be severe. The winds will be from the southwest around 10-15 knots and the waves will arrive about 2 to 4 feet earlier, diminishing a little later in the day. The sun will come in the afternoon and the temperatures will be in the 70’s by the lake. Southwesterly winds will help water temperatures recover some of the upwelling during the week.

On Saturday there will be another small chance of isolated showers and thunderstorms, although most of the day will be dry and sunny. Temperatures will be around 70 degrees at the lake. Winds will be around 10 to 15 knots from the west and waves will be around 1 to 2 feet.

A little sun is expected Sunday morning before clouds settle in the afternoon. Waves will be around 1 to 2 feet and winds will be southerly at 10 to 15 knots. Temperatures will be in the mid-1970s. A risk of showers and thunderstorms will occur in the evening.
