Bengaluru police on Thursday arrested seven people, including two women, in a case of alleged rape and torture of a woman in Ramamurthy Nagar. The arrests were made after a video clip of the alleged incident went viral on social media in Assam. Police believe the accused and the victim are Bangladeshi nationals.
“According to information revealed so far, they are all part of the same group and are believed to be from Bangladesh. Due to financial differences, the culprits brutalized the victim, who is also believed to be a Bangladeshi and was taken to India for human trafficking, ”said a senior police official, adding that the incident may have taken place. last week.
After the video surfaced on social media, Assam Police tweeted about the incident and even promised a reward to anyone who could provide information about it. According to Assam Police, the gang themselves recorded the incident and shared the video with their friends in Assam and other parts of the northeast.
Assam Police traced the origin of the phone number the video was sent from and immediately alerted Bengaluru Police. As a result, special teams were formed and, within hours, the gang was arrested on Thursday evening.
Police arrested the seven people at a rented house in Avalahalli, Ramamurthy Nagar in eastern Bengaluru. All are workers.
“Based on the contents of the video clip and the facts revealed during the preliminary questioning of the protected persons, a case of rape and assault under other relevant provisions of the law was recorded against the accused at the station. Ramamurthy Nagar Police Department, ”said the police chief mentioned.
The victim, 22, was then traced to a neighboring state and brought to Bengaluru by a special team to join the investigation, Bengaluru Police Commissioner Kamal Pant confirmed.
Speaking to reporters, Karnataka Interior Minister Basavraj Bommai said: “The video went viral on various social media sites and Union Minister Kiren Rijiju tweeted about the incident, then Bengaluru police tracked down the gang within hours and its members were arrested.
“According to the information provided by the accused, there are a few other people involved in this case and they are in neighboring Kerala. We will arrest them soon and a team is being formed to investigate this incident which is supervised by the police commissioner of the city of Bengaluru, ”he added.
Police opened fire on the rape accused on Friday morning when they were taken away to spot “Mahazar”. Police said they shot the two accused as they tried to flee. A senior officer said the accused attacked the police with stones as he tried to escape and in doing so, a police officer was injured.
The accused and the police officer are being treated in a government hospital, while the five other accused were presented to the magistrate of Bengaluru by video conference. All were taken into custody for 14 days.
