MAYPORT, Florida – It’s summer and the local boat launches welcome large crowds every weekend, especially the Mayport boat launch.
Some fear there isn’t enough parking for the boat rush this season.
People boating on Sunday told News4Jax it was difficult to find parking at the Mayport boat ramp, especially for vehicles equipped with a trailer to transport their boats.
“You’ve certainly seen it over the years get more and more crowded,” said Caleb Davis, who lives in the area and has used the Mayport boat launch for years.
Davis said when there are fishing tournaments and the snapper season begins, it is very difficult to find parking.
“You will be able to drive your boat here, but you will not be able to park here,” he said. “I parked and had to walk 10 minutes.”
The Beaches Leader ran an article saying the city of Jacksonville decided to close the overflow parking lot, but when News4Jax went on Sunday afternoon it was open.
According to the city’s website, there are 75 trailer parking spots available at the boat launch, as well as a few spots available in the overflow across the street.
But even with the overflow open, people are concerned that there is still not enough parking.
“It’s definitely one of the biggest boat launch ramps,” said Davis. “We would all like to see more parking.
