If one were to think about what an elephant likes to eat, the most common answer would be bananas. However, in a bizarre video that went viral from Assam, a gentle giant was seen gobbling up a helmet! While many thought the video was hilarious, others worried about the animal’s health.
In a clip widely circulated online, the defender is seen falling on a motorcycle parked near a barricade. Approaching the two-wheeler, the animal quickly lifts the helmet onto the handlebars with its trunk, puts it in its mouth and walks away.
As spectators watch the scene unfold in amazement, one person, possibly the owner of the bike, is shocked. “Areey… simple helmet hi toh chala gaya… Areey baba from dijiye helmet. Kaise jaunga principal? (Ohho, now my headphones are gone… please return my headphones. How am I going now?), ”We hear in the background.
The incident took place Tuesday morning in the Panjabari region of Guwahati, adjacent to the army’s cantonment in Narengi.
Talk to IndianExpress.com, a forestry official in the area said the elephant was safe because it had not “eaten the helmet”. “After picking up the helmet, the elephant kept it in his mouth for a while. However, he took it a step further and spat it out, ”said Jayanta Deka, DFO, Guwahati Wildlife Division.
He added that the elephant then crushed the helmet with his foot before returning to the forest.
As the video created a huge buzz online, it divided internet users. While some joked about how the biker would explain the situation to traffic police, others thought the video was very sad, claiming the elephant swallowed the helmet because it was looking for food.
Here’s how people reacted to the clip:
Someone please tell this hungry gentle giant that the helmet only saves life by wearing it and not eating it pic.twitter.com/rgA3bjoJgy

Must have taken possession in a playful way, because it looks like a ball.
Would have been interesting to see the full video what she ultimately does with the same

Therefore. Did the elephant gobble up this helmet after realizing it wasn’t edible?

After that the traffic police checked these guys without helmets. Think about the conversation between them😆😆

I think the person is applying coconut oil so the elephant found the smell in the helmet and thought it was coconut
– Rajeev Choudhury (@RajeevChoudhury) June 11, 2021
He thinks it’s some kind of coconut and he takes it. He’ll open it to find the edible part inside! Hopefully he won’t swallow the helmet. 🙏🏽

The town of Guwahati shares its border with the Amchang Wildlife Sanctuary, which covers an area of 78.64 km². It is not uncommon for elephants to roam the military cantonment area – and even the city – often. In fact, in May 2019, an elephant was in GS Road, an artery in Guwahati, and it took 18 hours for the forestry authorities to bring it back to the forest.
