To celebrate Black History Month, Bravo continued its Amplify our voices conversation with a February 10 Instagram Live hosted by Peyton Weiss of Bravo Social, and featuring Cynthia Bailey of The Real Housewives of Atlanta, Dr. Contessa Metcalfe of Married to medicine and The real housewives of New York newcomer, Eboni K. Williams. During the conversation, Dr Contessa explained how she and her family recognize Black History Month.
“To me, it’s a reminder that we really have to be intentional about talking about the contributions of African Americans to the mainstream fabric of American history and culture,” Dr. Contessa noted in the video above. “In fact, we spend a lot of time with our children, mainly teaching them to read. ”
Dr Contessa and her husband, Dr Scott Metcalfe, have three children together: daughters Lauren and Laila and son Landon. She explained that she was passionate about presenting important books to her children, because “literature was a way for us to communicate across the border”.
“There was no internet, there was no way for people to basically share our stories, so we had to write things down intentionally,” she said. “It was so important for us not to forget to look in the books.”
The mother of three also explained that as a family of entrepreneurs, they also make an effort to support black-owned businesses.
“I’m really intentional to reach out to people I know who have small businesses and try to make sure I try to support them, and especially during Black History Month. Especially during this economy, making sure every day that I make an intentional purchase.
