Robert J. Young
Robert J. Young, 83, of Milford, husband (43) of Janice (Eleven) Young, died on November 8, 2021. Born March 6, 1938 in Bridgeport, CT, he was the son of the late Donald and Alice ( Harding) Young.
Bob’s early childhood was spent in Bridgeport, then moved to the coastal community of Lordship. Bob loved the water and had boats from a young age. His 12 ‘dory has taken him on many adventures, most notably with his brother and his best friend, Art.
Bob attended Stratford HS and was captain of the first SHS swim team, which received the MBIAC championship trophy. Bob graduated in 1956, attended UB and then joined the Air Force for 4 years, where he was stationed at Elmendorf AFB in Anchorage Alaska, FE Warren AFB in Wyoming and Holloman AFB in Alamogordo New Brunswick. Mexico. When Bob left the service, he returned to Milford, where he resided for over 60 years. His business career began as the Managing Director of two Howard Johnson locations in Milford and included multiple civic activities. He was involved in the chamber of commerce and the food committee for the first Milford Oyster Festival. He served on the Milford Zoning Appeal Board and in 1972 chairman of the CT Hotel-Motel Association. He has taught hotel and motel management at Bullard Havens and as an assistant professor at the University of New Haven. After Howard Johnsons, Bob was a purchasing agent at Avco Lycoming / Textron from which he retired.
Bob’s love for boating and the water never stopped. He was a former commodore of the Rivercliff Yacht Club in Devon. In 1983, he joined the Valley Yacht Club of which he is still a member and was fleet captain for 10 years. Bob and Jan loved to travel with friends both on land (as far as New Zealand / Australia) and on the water. On a typical summer weekend, he would be on the boat with Jan, moored at Conscience Bay in Port Jefferson. Over the years, his boat trips have stretched from Newburyport, MA to the Florida Keys. Many of these adventures were shared with her friends: Karen & Rich, Lorraine & Bob, Ronnie & Sal and Sherry & Dave. As recently as September, he vacationed at Martha’s Vineyard. A special thank you to our friends, especially Sherry and Dave who have made sure Bob is able to take many trips over the past few months.
Bob never liked the cold; therefore, after his retirement, he began to winter in Florida. First in the Florida Keys, then the last 16 years have been in their home in Englewood, Florida. Bob was a certified diver and the waters of Florida were perfect for this and for fishing. His most recent dive was in the Cayman Islands in 2014.
Above all, Bob has always enjoyed spending time with and attending his grandchildren. From taking them by boat to dance recitals / concerts to all types of sports, he was always there to support and encourage them.
In addition to his wife, Bob is survived by his daughters, April (Bill) German and Allyson (Sal) Rosa; his beloved grandchildren, Ally German (Chris) Skiba, Max German, Sal Rosa III and Sam Rosa; her brother, Don (Janet) Young; brothers-in-law, Jim (JoAnn) Eleven, George (Kathy) Eleven and Matthew Eleven; her sisters-in-law, Margaret (Fran) Principi, Jennifer Harrold and Julie Onze; and several nieces, nephews and cousins; and her beloved aunt, Eleanor Young.
Also, a special thank you to Anthony for helping me take care of Bob over the past two months.
